Member Spotlight: Lieutenant Sam Slater
For Lieutenant Sam Slater, service is a family tradition. Inspired by his father’s lifelong dedication to the fire service, Sam spent his childhood around the firehouse, developing a deep admiration for the work. More than two and a half years ago, he decided to turn that admiration into action and joined the Bushnell’s Basin Fire Department.
Since then, Sam has hit the ground running. Through hard work and rigorous training, he recently earned a promotion to Lieutenant. He has also achieved a major department milestone: becoming fully qualified to drive and operate every single piece of apparatus in our fleet—a role that demands an immense amount of preparation, skill, and trust.
Overcoming Challenges Through Preparation
When asked about the demanding nature of the job, Sam notes that mastering the ability to stay calm during unpredictable, high-pressure situations is one of the greatest hurdles. He credits our weekly department drills, along with specialized county and state training courses, with building the confidence needed to handle any call. For Sam, readiness comes down to a simple formula: show up, put in the effort, and never stop learning.
A Second Family
The unique bond among our members is what helps Sam navigate the inherent stresses of firefighting. Whether mitigating a complex incident or unwinding outside the firehouse, the tight knit camaraderie at Bushnell’s Basin creates a supportive network like no other.
Beyond emergency responses, Sam is a familiar face at our community outreach events, frequently volunteering at Mighty Machine Mania and our annual Open House to chat with residents and showcase our lifesaving equipment.
Thinking of Joining?
Sam’s advice for prospective volunteers is straightforward:
“Show up, ask questions, and learn from the senior firefighters who are always willing to help. With an open mind and a strong work ethic, anyone can find their place in the fire service.”
